An unlawful assembly and state of emergency were declared as demonstrators clashed Saturday on the streets of Charlottesville, Va., ahead of a “Unite the Right” rally. White nationalists and other right-wing groups battled with counter-protesters as public figures, including President Donald Trump, decried the violence.

The fights unfolded just hours after a scuffle Friday night between torch-bearing demonstrators and counter-protesters at the nearby University of Virginia.
